“Well,” said Father again, “way up high in the sky, up where the clouds are, it needs to be below freezing since snow is made of ice crystals.”

Mary wondered, “How cold does it need to be down where we are before it will snow?”

When she asked Father her question, he replied , “It needs to be colder than 40 degrees Fahrenheit. But at that temperature the snow will melt when it touches the warm ground.”

“Is that all that is needed to make it snow, just cold temperatures?” asked Mary.

“Oh, no,” laughed Father, “there also need to be some clouds in the sky that have moisture in them.”
