It would be worth it for meat in the coming months, when everyone’s stores ran low. He knew his business as well as his dogs, and he never pushed the time too much. If they didn’t reach the woods’ edge soon, he would unload one of the deer. It would wound his pride, but better that than delay his return home at this hour. One deer’s weight would lighten the load, and there would still be much on the sled. Better to let the wolves have one than to not return home.

The trees thinned ahead of him. He smiled as the dogs bounded ahead eagerly, anxious to be home, surrounded by warmth and food.
