Have you ever read about Loki, of Norse mythology? He’s half-god, half-giant – and can’t seem to decide which side he’s on! Or Hermes, who stole his brother’s cows and later placated Apollo with the lyre? Native Americans believed in Coyote, and Africans have Eshu. Tricksters are discussed in greater detail here.
Presenting Modern Myths – Trickery, the third installment of the Modern Myths series.
Carmen says:
Tricksters are popular in stories, especially myths – probably because people wanted someone to blame when things go wrong. Regardless of why they came to be, tricksters are popular – it’s fun to read about the clever ways we can fool each other.
On that note, think about situations that allow for tricksters. Think of a tough situation – how would your trickster get out of it? Write a story about the adventures your trickster has. Does he (or she) always come out on top, or does someone eventually out-think him?
