Many years ago, while sitting in an English class discussing poetry, I received an assignment to write a ballad. A ballad is a poem that tells a story. Often it is set to music.
I chose to write my ballad about Robin Hood. There are many stories about Robin Hood, but for the assignment I decided to write my own. Because I was trying to sound like an old English ballad, I used words like quoth (said), foiled (defeated), and yonder (the one over there). I also used contractions such as ’twas (it was) and o’er (over).
For this writing assignment, take the ballad O’er and O’er and write the story that is told in the poem as a short prose story. You need to include the details given in the poem, but you can add more details to your story if you wish.
Have fun writing.
